Sermon text (not used): Matthew 20:1-16
That we will rejoice in your generosity to all
Generous God, we like to think that we have earned your favor by our faithful service to You. We like to think that we merit more of your blessing than others because we have been following Jesus for many years and practicing obedience for a long time.
We do not want those whom we perceive as lazy or licentious to receive your generosity in full measure—at least not right away—maybe later.
God of truth, overcome our pride, our distorted understanding of who we are. Enable us to see the truth about our relationship with You more clearly. Remind us that everything we have from You is because You are merciful: our faith has been elicited by your faithfulness; our obedience has been energized by your power; our love is the fruit of your love for us.
You have called, and we have answered your welcoming voice. Enable us to rejoice with all who answer your invitation to service and friendship, and who receive the benefits of your generosity as treasured gifts. Let us rejoice to see your realm of mercy extended to those who do not yet know You or serve You. Amen.
