Prayer for March 29-April 4, 2015
Sermon Text: (Mark 14:1-15:47)

That we may turn from fickle and perverse ways

Jesus, how fickle and even perverse we can be.  You come among us bearing the marks of leadership and acting in sovereignty in order to bring God’s reign of peace among us.  We extol you.  We shout our praises to God.  We rejoice at what appears to be the greatest thing that has ever happened among us.

In just a few days, the story changes.  We are among those who plot against You as your enemies.  We are among those who criticize the extravagant use of resources for your benefit.  We are among those who betray You and deny You.  We are among those who curse You and hurt You and mock and revile You.  We are among those who testify falsely about what You have said and done.  We are among those who scream for your death, lead You to your crucifixion, and taunt You as You hang dying before our eyes.

But we are also among those who are deeply saddened by their own acts of denial, their own failures to stay close and act loyally in the midst of trial.  We are among those who tend your body and lay it to rest.  We are among those who watch what seems like the final page of your drama with mixed emotions.  We are among those who hope, beyond hope, that your story has not ended.  Amen.
